8 shows and movies starring Leandie du Randt
One glance at Leandie du Randt’s verified Instagram account with just under 200k followers would leave you wondering if a day actually consists of 26 hours instead of 24 and nobody ever bothered to inform you, because this South African beauty is busy!
Apart from being one of our country’s most recognised and sought-after leading ladies, she is also a presenter, author and entrepreneur. She has launched her own clothing line, an online shop, published two motivational books and even put her own red wine on the shelves back in 2017 when South Africa was still a country selling booze.
As recently as three months ago, she was also part of an all-female panel of Miss South Africa judges alongside Zozibini Tunzi, Peggy-Sue Khumalo, Anele Mdoda and Kim Engelbrecht (Konfetti). And on 28 January 2021, it was announced that she would be the host of South Africa’s first ever season of Love Island, coming to DStv on 28 February!
Leandie accomplished all this and more over the last decade and she hasn’t even reached her mid-30s yet. Let’s have a look at some of the highlights from her repertoire that helped shape her acting career. You can stream all of these titles on Showmax right now.
It all started with Getroud Met Rugby
Well, sort of – it all actually started with Brümilda van Rensburg. At varsity, Leandie was crowned as Miss Personality and her prize was a course at the Brümilda van Rensburg Drama Academy. It was also Brümilda who prepared her for her role as Mieke in Getroud Met Rugby, her first big role that ultimately launched her career.
Her character also recently made a comeback after a decade: “Mieke has become more mature over the years and she is also more confident about herself and also more literate. She is married and is visiting South Africa.”
Leandie is no stranger to Die Silwerskermfees
Gebles is a brilliant Silwerskermfees short that tells the story of Jona (Stiaan Smith), a guy who peaked in high school. A decade later all his friends have moved on but he still clings to his past, his model ex, his struggling career and his receding hairline. Leandrie is, of course, the model ex, Chantel.
Leandie’s motivational nature led her to host a hit TV series
Slank is a lifestyle doccie aimed at helping participants to lose weight. These people have tried and tested every diet and health mix available on the shelves. Slank is truly life-changing stuff, with four seasons under the belt. That’s 52 life-changing stories at 13 episodes per series!
Husband and wife were boetie en sussie?
In the 2018 movie Thys en Trix, Leandie and then real-life husband, Bouwer Bosch, played the roles of a brother and sister team of hapless and ever feuding detectives. The sibs bring shame to the police department and things get really awkies when they have to go undercover as a married couple to solve a murder case. This movie is like the Pretoria version of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and it is heaps of fun!
What about a romcom lead?
Die Windpomp tells the story of 17-year-old Henri, who thinks he has the worst luck because he is stuck at a retirement village for his holiday. Bummer. But then he meets Margot, the young, beautiful local ballet teacher, played by Leandie, a role that won her Best Actress at the kykNET ‘s Silverskermfees. This is a really charming romantic comedy.
Supporting role? No problem
Inspired by Charlize Theron’s Oscar win, character Jana Van Tonder (played by Christia Venter), who lives in an impoverished neighbourhood with her dysfunctional parents, decides to transform her 2004 Matric farewell into her own glamorous red carpet event in Hollywood In My Huis. Tension comes compliments of the most popular girl in school, Angelique, played by Leandie.
That one time when a role came in handy in real life
Just over a year ago, Leandie was leaving the 44 Stanley shopping centre in Joburg when she was attacked by muggers who wanted to steal her cell phone. Luckily her self defence training for the Deon Meyer movie Jagveld helped her resist her attackers, and two car guards also came to her rescue. In Jagveld (also known as Hunting Emma), Leandie delivers a stellar performance as pacifist Emma, who witnesses a murder in the wild and finds herself on the run from some very dangerous people.
The slightly blurred lines between art and real life
In a Facebook post towards the end of 2020, Leandie shared some of her thoughts on her latest movie, Meisies Wat Fluit, saying that “this film is real life”. It tells the story of Henk and Sofia, who fell in love too soon, got married too soon and got divorced too soon. Their marriage didn’t work, but maybe a new type of relationship could? Notably, Leandie got divorced (from Bouwer Bosch) in real life and she also lost her mother before turning 32. To date, this seems to be the most important role of her career on a personal level.
