Season 1 of Below the Surface (Gidseltagningen in Denmark) saw Terror Task Force commander Philip Nørgaard (Johannes Lassen) unravel a bungled hostage situation on a train. In Season 2, Philip tackles a hostage drama on a ferry – and it involves a newly returned freedom fighter who was kidnapped by Isis.
Reading subtitles isn’t easy while watching the screen. But for this series, it’s important and will lead you into a psychological thrill ride with more twists and turns than a playground jungle gym. Johannes’s portrayal of a dour Philip drives the drama forward. The storyline is intense, and the screenplay pulls you in to the point where you could binge the eight-episode season in a night if it was physically possible.
If there’s one thing the Scandinavians do better than anyone else, it’s creating captivating, intense cop thrillers. And this is no exception. Anthony Morris at sbs.com.au comments: “Unlike the first season, this one doesn’t focus as much on the backstories of the hostages, which is fair enough. There’s a lot of story going on here already, especially once it starts introducing flashbacks.”
