“Malek does an impressive job of re-creating Mercury’s moves onstage, but the core of the performance is Malek’s intensely thoughtful, insight-rich channelling of Mercury’s hurt, his alienation and isolation even at the height of his fame,” wrote The New Yorker.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences agreed, and Rami Malek took home the Oscar for Best Actor, making him the first actor of Arabic heritage to do so, for his role as Freddie Mercury in this celebration of one of the greatest bands of the 20th Century, Queen, and their iconic frontman.
It’s uncanny how much Malek resembles Freddie Mercury – a lot of that has to do with the prosthetic front teeth that gave him Mercury’s distinctive overbite. (After filming wrapped, Malek decided to keep the prosthesis as a memento and eventually had them cast in gold.)
And when you watch, you’ll likely wonder – is that Rami Malek singing? Well, partly. The singing voice of Freddie Mercury is, in fact, a mix of Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek and Canadian Singer Marc Martel. The three voices are seamlessly mixed.
