The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3
IMDb rating: 7.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%
Half mortal, half witch, Sabrina Spellman and her family and friends return for Part 3 (not “Season” 3 like all other normal series), and the critics are giddy with delight.
A quick recap of the end of Part 2: Lucifer (Luke Cook) showed himself and declared Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka, Mad Men) Queen of Hell because it turns out he is her real father. Lilith (Michelle Gomez) was not amused, and while conspiring with Sabrina to overthrow the Dark Lord she also usurped the throne.
The important bit here is that the Devil ended up being trapped inside Nick’s (Gavin Leatherwood) body. And this is pretty much where Part 3 opens, with Sabrina determined to save her boyfriend as well as claiming her rightful place, and crown, with Lilith as an unexpected ally.
This is easier said than done, because the residents of the underworld have their doubts, and there is yet another contender, the young Prince Caliban (Sam Corlett). The result will be settled with a good old “best of three” competition, in which each of them must retrieve a specific item of evil from history, as determined by the elders.
Elsewhere, more supernatural and mystical elements are brought into play, and the story delves into different cultures that don’t necessarily reside comfortably side by side.
On CBR.com, Kevin Melrose writes: “Arguably the best installment of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina so far, Part 3 builds upon well-developed characters, and a fully realised world and mythology. Although the latter expands, with the additions of pagans, repeated visits to Hell, and even more intricate ties to Riverdale, the audience has by this point become so immersed in Sabrina’s raucous universe that those are hardly curve balls. Viewers simply settle in and enjoy the crazy ride.”
