It’s the 1990s in Boston, a turbulent time for the beautiful city, rife with racial tensions, violence and organised crime, all helped along by a lax criminal justice system and cops who are just as crooked as the criminals. It might sound like a grim place, but this story unfolds as a love letter to the city, in all its darkness and all its hope – which is not surprising, given that it’s produced by proud Bostonians Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
It’s against this backdrop of corruption, nepotism and turning-a-blind-eye that Decourcey Ward (Aldis Hodge) is earning his living as assistant district attorney, coming up against bureaucracy and racism at every turn. He’s referred to as “an affirmative action hire” to his face and behind his back, and he’s had enough.
When legendary FBI veteran Jackie Rohr approaches him and asks him to let a cop-shooter suspect walk because he’s Jackie’s snitch (played by Macauley and Kieran’s lesser-known little brother Rory Culkin), Decourcey refuses. Jackie gets his way in the end, as usual, and that’s when Decourcey realises that Jackie is exactly who he needs on his side to help him solve the case of the robbery of an armoured vehicle, with the three guards mysteriously missing.
Meanwhile, in Charlestown, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, populated by working-class families with Irish-American roots, Frankie Ryan (played with an incredible combination of pathos and toughness by Jonathan Tucker) is doing what he can to support his three children and his degenerate younger brother Jimmy – and, other than packing shelves at a grocery store, that also involves dealing in automatic weapons and robbing the odd armoured vehicle…
