Jade is a young, single mother living in London. She’s had limited education and opportunities, but she’s always managed to get by on her looks.
Until an acid attack leaves her with severe facial burns. Her face has been reconstructed, but she’s no longer the beauty she once was. She’s drifted apart from her daughter, and from herself, and realises at her lowest point that she needs to reconstruct her life, piece by piece.
This deeply affecting and disturbing drama has won numerous awards, including Best Film at the Netherlands Film Festival, and has been praised for its bravery and unflinching portrayal of Jade’s life. The Independent writes, “In a frank but sensitive way, [Sacha] Polak delves into areas that most other filmmakers would be far too timid to go near.”
Vicky Knight, who plays Jade gives an incredible performance. The Guardian writes, “I really hope Knight finds a place in the film industry; with her terrific performance here she’s earned it.”
As Time Out says, Dirty God is “a grounded story of human resilience that can’t help but move you.”
