Fighting With My Family (2019)
Based on the real life of WWE superstar wrestler Paige Knight, this British comedy is one for the whole family.
Florence Pugh plays young Paige, whose unconventional wrestling-obsessed family includes Nick Frost, who plays her father Rowdy Rick Knight, and Lena Headey (yep, from Game of Thrones), who plays her mother Sweet Saraya Knight. Stephen Merchant, who directed the film, also stars in a small role. Dwayne Johnson plays himself, as a world-famous former wrestler star.
When Paige and her brother Zak are invited to try out for WWE, she is ecstatic – until she is accepted into the gruelling training programme, and is forced to leave her tight-knit family behind and make her own way in the sport and in the world.
The Times UK says, “Stephen Merchant’s film about an American wrestling family is a triumph, with a star turn from Florence Pugh” and “Florence Pugh’s knockout performance is the winner in this zesty wrestling drama”. The Spool agrees: “If this is an indicator of the future of WWE Productions’ output, we can look forward to an unlikely heel-turn for the company into making – gasp – good films.”
