Is Asanda’s father losing control over his family?

In his attempt to keep his scholarship, Asanda and his mother go against his father's wishes all in the name of rugby. By Zibuyile Dladla

We’re only in the second episode of Grassroots, but the show already has us on the edge of our seats as Asanda and Monwabisi’s generational rivalry escalates. Both of them are passionate about one day becoming professional rugby players. But it is Monwabisi’s rugby skills that grant him a rugby scholarship to one of the most prestigious high schools in Johannesburg (St Sebastians School). Asanda, on the other hand, finds himself stuck in the Eastern Cape with no scholarship and a rugby career that is dwindling right before his eyes.

The scholarship struggle

However, it is his mother’s determination to get him a scholarship that helps resuscitate Asanda’s rugby career – even though this is an act against his father’s wishes.

Through a bribe orchestrated by his mother (Epainette), Asanda travels to Johannesburg to start his schooling career at St Sebastian, without his father’s knowledge. But when his father eventually finds out that both his wife and son had done this all behind his back, all hell breaks loose.

As the head of the house, you’d think that Buzwe (Asanda’s father), would have the last word in this situation, but little does he know that mother and son have their own plans in mind.

Buzwe has no say

In his attempt to get his son back home to the Eastern Cape, Buzwe fails dismally at convincing his son to return home. Not only does Asanda refuse to leave St Sebastian, but he also threatens to reveal a family secret that could potentially cause a greater rift between his and Monwabisi’s family too.

How far will he go to control the direction of Asanda's life? #Grassroots

Will Buzwe be able to position himself as the head of the house, or will his son and wife continue to do as they please, all in the name of a rugby scholarship?
