Hubie Halloween (2020)
IMDb rating: 5.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 49%
Hubie Dubois is the town joke, but he takes his duties seriously – every Halloween, he takes it upon himself to make sure every resident of his hometown in safe.
But this year, there’s something off, and it’s more than the tricks the townsfolk are playing on him. Hubie is now their only hope – can he convince them that the monsters are real?
The cast list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, with Julie Bowen, Kevin James, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider and Maya Rudolph supporting Adam Sandler as Hubie. It’s as slapstick as any of the earlier comedies made by Sandler and his Happy Madison production company – think: Grown-Ups, Big Daddy, 50 First Dates – but critics have largely declared it charming, feel-good fare for Halloween.
Independent (UK) calls it “a light, sweet and nostalgic comedy that is pleasantly devoid of high stakes”, and Vulture says, “None of this is particularly original, but nobody said you had to be original to make people laugh.”
