If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)
IMDb rating: 8.0/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%
Every parent’s worst nightmare is something bad happening to their child. But in this world, it’s become an all-too-common occurrence. How does a parent, or anyone really, work through that emotional rollercoaster? Illustrated short movie If Anything Happens I Love You is there to lend a guiding hand.
Writers and directors Will McCormack and Michael Govier have come together with animator Youngran Nho to create one of the most touching, heart-felt, deep movies of 2020, if not ever. It’s 12 minutes of sheer heartache as the events unfurl: two parents battle with the grief of losing their child. There are no words, just images captured incredibly in watercolour and simple lines to give it a raw, unfinished feel… which is the emotion being conveyed.
Collin Souter from rogerebert.com tells it like it is: “In all my years of covering short films, I’ve never seen anything like what has happened with If Anything Happens I Love You. The film will undoubtedly spark conversations, but the impact of watching it might delay those discussions as you gather your thoughts and emotions together.”
ICYMI: This is one of Netflix’s three submissions for Best Animated Short Film at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021.
