Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 99%
When trailblazing blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and her band, including her ambitious horn player (Chadwick Boseman), gather at a recording studio in Chicago in 1927, the white management try to assert their control over the band as tensions rise.
Critics have praised Davis’s and the late Boswick’s performances, with the Washington Post writing, “There aren’t enough words to describe just how breathtaking Davis’s performance is as Ma Rainey. When it comes to Boseman’s, on the other hand, only one seems to suffice: Damn, damn, damn.”
