Kate Winslet takes the producer’s seat and the lead role as a traumatised small-town detective in this HBO limited series. As Mare Sheehan pushes the boundaries of solving a murder, she uncovers the secrets and tragedies of the close-knit community in her Pennsylvania town.
The series exposes the dark side of this kind of insular, small-town community, and through Mare’s own tragic history, shows how the present is defined by everything that came before – that the past is never really over.
Critics have praised Winslet’s performance, with the Arizona Republic saying, “Winslet is the show. Her performance is fascinating – powerful, but she never overpowers it. It’s a difficult task to make someone want to watch you suffer.”
But the ensemble cast around her, including Evan Peters (American Animals, American Horror Story) as Detective Zabel, has also been lauded for their convincing roles. RogerEbert.com writes, “Every performance here works, which is a great credit to [executive producer] Zobel for tying these characters together in a way that makes the supporting players seem like actual locals with full lives.”
