Vula Vala S1 will introduce some new faces and familiar favourites to the cast. Take a look at who’s joining the new drama series, airing every Sunday at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic (Channel 161) with episodes landing on Mondays on Showmax and DStv online.
Khanyisani Kheswa as Mzi
Despite being a talented footballer, the 20-something Mzi is a kid on a fast track to nowhere. Born and raised in Ladysmith, despite growing up in a loving family with an attentive father, a doting mother, and a little brother that he’s devoted to, Mzi is just living his life in a steady progress of shadows.
His dad Percy sends him to Johannesburg to work in his Uncle Bheki’s supermarket. Mzi jumps at the chance to go to the big city. But, once there, he finds all is not as it seems in the City of Gold.
Sello Maake Ka-Ncube as Bra Rex
Bra Rex is an anomaly in the world of football. A glorious star in his heyday, he manages to use his wealth and fame to establish a soccer club called The Scorpions.
Bra Rex runs The Scorpions with an iron fist. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep himself, his club, and his family at the absolute echelon of South African football, and society at large.
He presents one face to the outside world: that of the humble footballer turned owner, who provides entertainment to the people that love the Beautiful Game. But, in private, he’s a ruthless, and maybe even deadly, businessman who will do whatever is necessary to keep his name in the papers.
Zola Mzisi as Lefa Kwena
Lefa lives in the shadow of his father’s greatness and the secrecy of his sexuality.
He’s desperate for approval but always falls short. Lefa is also the only son of Bra Rex and Thembi.
He isn’t talented enough to play soccer professionally, which disappoints his father greatly.
Lefa now works as a talent scout/agent for The Warriors. He tries to live up to his father’s expectations but falls short of doing so.
Tina Jaxa as Thembi
Thembi, Bra Rex’s wife, is a woman driven by wealth, success and the comfort of her family. She will do anything to protect what’s hers.
Thembi is the ultimate partner in crime for Rex. She has no qualms in participating in nefarious and criminal acts with him in order to maintain their wealth. Her firstborn son, Lefa, is the apple of her eye. She constantly takes his side during Lefa’s fights with his father.
Patricia Khumalo as Dudu
At first glance, Dudu appears to be nothing more than an ordinary housewife, taking care of her home, her husband, and her two sons. But she carries a heavy secret, one that could shatter Rex and his family’s world: years ago, she had an affair with Bra Rex and fell pregnant.
Sthandile Nkosi as Teaspoon
Teaspoon is a vibrant young lady who works for Bheki in the supermarket and keeps her ear close to the ground. When Mzi steps in to run the store, she becomes his right-hand woman and helps him navigate this new world as a store owner. She’s a tough girl who becomes very protective of Mzi.
The more she gets to know Mzi, the more she likes him. Although she seems hardcore and ambitious on the outside, through her journey of love with Mzi we see her loyalty and vulnerability.
Darlington Michaels as Gab
Gab is a small-time hustler that finds a way to make money wherever he goes.
He lives in a back room on Bheki’s property and runs an unofficial gambling ring around the amateur community soccer games.
He’s the first to realise Mzi’s talent in Johannesburg and introduces him to the community soccer world in the hopes of making some money off him.
