Who’s who in Reyka
Find out more about the talented cast who star alongside Kim Engelbrecht and Iain Glen.
Young Reyka: local singer Gabrielle de Gama
We see the teenaged version of Reyka in the flashback scenes, which go back to the year 1994, when Reyka was abducted by Speelman.
“When Reyka gets kidnapped, that really changes who she is,” explains Gabrielle. “Her kidnapping definitely influences her when she is older, she experiences flashbacks of her own kidnapping and strangely enough that helps her to solve the crimes she now has to investigate.”
Thuli Gama, Reyka’s daughter: newcomer Rashaan Stackling
She is trying to fix her bond with her mother, Reyka. “It affects Thuli’s personality,” says Rashaan. “They have a lot of emotional baggage that comes with them, and I think that Thuli thinks Reyka doesn’t really know how to be a mother to her daughter, she is physically there but not mentally and that impacts on their situation.”
Elsa Meyer: Anna-Mart van der Merwe
You’ll recognise her as: Julie in drama series Tydelik Terminaal
In her heyday, “Reyka’s mom was a reporter for newspapers during the political era change, and she isn’t your lipstick in the handbag sort of character,” says Anna-Mart, whose character is also trying to fix her mother-daughter relationship.
Nandi Cele: Thando Thabethe
You’ll recognise her as: Linda in Mzansi Magic drama series Housekeepers
“She is an energetic and driven detective,” says Thando. “She’s trying to climb the ladder and prove herself. Nandi does everything by the book, where Reyka has an outlandish way of working. Nandi thinks that’s a flaw, but she looks up to Reyka.”
Alia Sewsunker: Leeanda Reddy
You’ll recognise her as: Nirvana in soapie Legacy
“She is a tough chick,” says Leeanda. “As a forensic detective, she is an important part of Reyka and her team because of her expertise in police and crime work. She doesn’t go on hunches; she works purely on the facts and evidence that is before her.”
Nick Tanner: Gerald Steyn
“He is a cowboy and he likes kicking doors open,” says Gerald of his detective character. “He’s like a bull in a china shop, but in the end, he is serious about his job and catching the bad guys is his only goal in life.”
Hector Zwane: Hamilton Dhlamini
You’ll recognise him as: Crime lord Banzi in telenovela Isithembiso
“He’s the top cop in Reyka’s investigation of the serial killer,” says Hamilton. “He was well trained during apartheid and by the police of that era. He is doing a good job in the midst of corruption and isn’t tainted by those wanting him to turn a blind eye.”
Samuel Zwane: Mavuso Simelane
You’ll recognise him as: Kalehe Mampata in drama series The Widow
The straight-laced police investigator character stood out to Mavuso. “Reyka is an authentic story and I want to do it justice it in my acting. I remember reading the script last year during lockdown and it intrigued me so much that I could not put it down. That’s how good it is.”
