Described as one of Martin Scorsese’s greatest and certainly most impassioned works, this movie explores spirituality and human nature. Set in the 1600s, it follows two young Portuguese missionaries (played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield) who undertake a dangerous journey to Japan to locate their missing mentor (Liam Neeson).
It’s set at the time of the extinction of Catholicism in feudal Japan, where villagers who had converted to Christianity had to worship in secret. If they were discovered, they would be forced to renounce their faith or face an agonising death.
The Atlantic says, “Scorsese’s abiding passion and respect for his source material are everywhere in evidence.” MTV describes Silence as stunning and violent, and says that it “forces us to grapple with our own religious doubts and uncertainties”.
