Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (2018)
IMDb rating: 6.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%
Robin and his pals Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven and Starfire are teenage superheroes who dream of superstardom. Every superhero and their accoutrements have their own movie – including Batman’s belt – but Robin has been sorely overlooked by Hollywood.
So the Teen Titans set out to make his dreams come true and turn the sidekick into a star.
And as every superhero movie fan knows, all superheroes need arch-nemeses. So the Teen Titans pick Slade (mostly because this super-villain’s name is really fun to say), voiced by producer Will Arnett, to be theirs. But they didn’t count on Slade having an actual, real diabolical plan to take over the Earth…
Parents, don’t dismiss this as typical kid/tween-fodder – you will enjoy this movie as much as your kids. The fart jokes are excellent (yes, really) and the voice cast includes Nicolas Cage as Superman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, singer Halsey as Wonder Woman, and rapper Lil Yachty as Green Lantern. Plus, there’s an animated Stan Lee, borrowed from Marvel for a parody bit on his endless cameos in that cinematic universe.
Will Arnett is no stranger to lending his voice to superheroes and supervillains.
He also voices Batman in The LEGO Batman Movie. Here’s what he said about how he thought about that role in relation to his performance as Slade:
“In (The Lego Batman Movie), we thought it was funny that as at the voices got darker and darker in the live-action Batman, what would it sound like if a guy spoke like that all the time,” he says. “No matter what. Even in the most emotional moments, if he was always that guy. That’s funny to me.”
He also voices the banker in Despicable Me, and “decided that character should ‘sound like every time he said the word money he was going to eat money, almost like he was salivating.'”
