When true crime collides with haute couture
The Assassination of Gianni Versace was hands-down one of the most impressive American Crime series in 2018, and now it’s streaming on Netflix, with new episodes dropping weekly.
The nine-episode series centres on the Italian designer’s murder, a bloody event that sent shockwaves throughout the fashion industry back in 1997. It also takes us on a creepy journey inside the mind of his murderer.
Gianni Versace is played wonderfully by Édgar Ramírez, and former Glee actor, Darren Criss, plays the role of the handsome, intelligent yet psychotic gay man, by the name of Andrew Cunanan, who shot Gianni Versace dead in broad daylight in front of his Miami home 22 years ago.
Executive producer Ryan Murphy takes viewers on a non-chronological journey of events that led up to Versace’s death. These help us better understand Andrew Cunanan’s upbringing, from his persona as a habitual liar, to his obsession with living lavishly and his somewhat questionable relationship with his father.
This behind-the-scenes look creates a sort of closure, providing answers to the question of why Cunanan killed Versace in cold blood.
Back to the 90s
From the colourful fashion to long-forgotten props like walkmans, VHS machines, and cassette tapes, objects that were once part of our daily lives, this series embodies the 90s. It’s also a reminder of how much things have changed.
If you were a fan of Latin singer Ricky Martin, you’ll be pleased to know that he plays the role of Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s life-long partner, while Penélope Cruz plays the role of Donatella Versace, the late fashion designer’s younger sister and current vice president of the Versace Group.
Awards never go out of fashion
This production has received many nominations and accolades, including Emmys, People’s Choice Awards, American Institute Awards and more.
If you’re intrigued as to why someone would murder of one of the world’s most renowned designers, and about the man who killed him, then The Assassination of Gianni Versace is a must-watch.
