The End of the F***ing World S2
This show, which originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK before being taken up by Netflix, was something of a breakout sleeper hit in 2017. Now, two years later, we finally find out what happened to Alyssa and James after the cataclysmic Season 1 finale.
Though, actually, we only find out what happened to Alyssa in episodes 1 and 2. James is nowhere to be seen – could he have been shot dead after all?
In the intervening years, Alyssa moved to a new town to live with her aunt, and is now working in her aunt’s cafe. And she’s met someone else – in fact, she’s engaged to be married.
And, most importantly, the new season introduces a new character: Bonnie. She’s connected to James and Alyssa, though we won’t tell you how. She’s got vengeance on her mind, and James and Alyssa’s names on bullets, which she sends to them directly. What does Bonnie want from them? Will Alyssa have to deal with Bonnie on her own? Or will James somehow miraculously reappear to help? We won’t spoil Season 2 for you – you’ll have to watch it yourself to find out.
Here’s what the critics have to say:
- The Guardian: “One of the skills of this show is its light touch when it comes to humour, which arrives unexpectedly, in the bleakest of moments.”
- The Hollywood Reporter: “… few episodes ever [reach] the 18-minute mark, containing within them more story and character than plenty of hourlong dramas … a real tour de force.”
- BBC.com: “But as well as its cinematic narrative, there’s also its very cinematic aesthetic to consider. With its hyper-stylised visuals and sometimes arch dialogue, you can detect the influence of filmmakers from the Coen Brothers to Wes Anderson and Tarantino to David Lynch.”
