The Goop Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow

IMDB IMDb rating: 1.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes Rotten Tomatoes rating: 20%

There’s nothing we can write about this docuseries that the great reviewers around the internet have not said better than we ever could. Here’s what to expect.

Slate: “What caught us off guard: some episodes hint at a version of Goop that dispenses information that could actually be mildly useful, such as learning a good breathing technique, or being aware of what kinds of bodies are featured in media.”

Also Slate: “Wendy Lauria, Goop’s VP of marketing, get what’s known as a ‘thread lift’. A plastic surgeon numbs her face, then uses a long needle to sew four barbed plastic sutures into each of her cheeks, which will dissolve in several months. How is this procedure more natural than fillers? Unclear! Though there is less data showing that thread lifts are safe and effective.”

Variety: “Anyone who’s ever fantasised about self-improvement may be able to see how it seems not just unsporting but grimly humourless to press the point in the face of Paltrow’s pose of simple curiosity and just-asking-questions. There’s a reason that snake oil was successful long before Paltrow discovered it: Slick things are shiny too.”

Vulture: “The half-hour installments, which each focus on a specific wellness topic and recruit Goop employees to try out various treatments and therapies, are actually interesting and informative. My chief complaint about The Goop Lab, believe it or not, is that its episodes need to be a little longer. I just wrote that sentence and meant it. I know: It’s unbelievable to me, too!”

The Guardian: “Like the star’s wellness brand, this whole show is a demented paean to self-indulgence. And for someone peddling health treatments, she seems alarmingly ignorant about anatomy. She suggests you steam it, put jade eggs up it and recently launched a candle that smells like it, but Gwyneth Paltrow seems not to know what a vagina is.”
