The Irishman (2019)
IMDb rating: 8.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 96%
The ultimate gangster movie is a tale narrated by hitman Frank Sheeran, who worked for some of the most infamous mob bosses in modern history alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th Century, and touches on that great unsolved mystery: what happened to Jimmy Hoffa.
Critics have absolutely raved about the film, with the Boston Globe saying, “It’s the ultimate fusing of Scorsese’s two sides… And even though it takes a while to get there, the movie is a masterpiece, one made by a man counting down his own years as if they were rosary beads.”
Stuff.co.nz says, “If De Niro, delivering his best performance in more than a decade, is the heart and soul of The Irishman, then Pacino is the undoubted scene-stealer.”
With Roma having been a big winner in the previous Oscars, it’s no surprise that Netflix has its eyes on the prize with this movie as well, releasing it in cinemas before bringing it to the streaming platform. It’s Netflix’s biggest theatrical release to date, and definitely one to keep an eye on when the Oscar nominees are announced early in 2020.
