In Shane Meadows’s latest drama series, Stephen Graham (whom you may recognise from Boardwalk Empire) plays Joseph, a middle-aged man who seems to be losing everything, including his mind. His wife and 10-year-old son are about to emigrate to Australia while he is to remain in the English Midlands doing odd jobs and living in his council flat.
But after a night of heavy drinking with strangers, Joseph decides to leave his life in England behind and to go home to Belfast to confront his past. It turns out that he and his sister spent their childhood in the care system, and the trauma they went through as kids continues to haunt them.
While he’s in Belfast, Joseph meets Dinah, who has her own ghosts, and they both set off on a journey of redemption.
Variety writes, “It boasts the hallmarks that have made Meadows one of the UK’s most notable auteurs: Kitchen-sink realism, extraordinary performances, emotion, large shards of humour.” The Guardian calls the final 20 minutes of the finale “among the most intense passages in TV history”.
