This anthology series explores terror in America, with the 1950s-set first season centring on a Black family who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighbourhood during the period known as The Great Migration.
The family’s idyllic home soon becomes a terrifying site for malevolent forces, next-door and otherworldly, who threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
Critics have been divided on the show’s effectiveness, but they agree on the brilliance of its aesthetic: Arizona Republic says, “It’s all sunshine and suburbs and rotten to the core”, with Financial Times writing, “The series, created by Little Marvin, is most original when unpeeling the homeliest signifiers of Americana – fruit pies have never looked so sinister.”
