Video: Hidden clues to look out for in the first episode of HBO’s Watchmen

The show is a treat for DC comic book fanatics, who love seeing the masked vigilante superheroes in a sort-of alternate present brought to life. But for novices, it can be a little tricky to unravel. By Zibuyile Dladla

The series is known for being complex and confusing if you lack basic knowledge of the original graphic novel. But, thanks to various articles and YouTube videos, Watchmen (now streaming weekly on Showmax and DStv Now) can be a pleasure to watch, especially when certain aspects of the show are broken down for you.

It is also helpful to understand that the series is a sequel to writers Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s original comic book of the same name. Kind of – they’ve also referred to as a “remix”. It’s not a remake of the movie released in 2009.

(Super-fans: have you seen HBO’s incredible tie-in website Peteypedia? It reveals what happened between the graphic novel and the show, and, quite frankly, it’s mandatory reading.)

If you’ve never read the comic book, but watched the first episode of the series and found yourself a little confounded, fret not. Here is an IMDb video that shows you what to look out for in episode 1.

Spoiler alert

Don’t watch this video if you haven’t seen episode 1 of Watchmen yet. But if you have, and need some clarity on a few things, then go ahead and watch!

Watchmen episodes 1-3 are now streaming on Showmax and DStv Now, and new episodes arrive weekly.
