Virtual meets reality at the Jurassic Park watch party with Spling
Jurassic Park is one of those nostalgic classics that’s aged remarkably well! Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum may be doing some of their best work today but they’ll be immortalised thanks to Steven Spielberg’s adaptation.
Loosely inspired by The Lost World and based on the bestseller by Michael Crichton, the original Jurassic Park was revolutionary for its time, bringing dinosaurs to life and igniting a generation of dino fans. With a soaring soundtrack, a sharp cast, next-generation CGI, immersive storytelling and one of the most suspenseful horror sci-fi thrillers ever, it’s no wonder the Jurassic World spin-off with Chris Pratt had to happen!
Spling decided to revisit Spielberg’s original to honour the first reveal of “living and breathing” dinosaurs on the silver screen. Now part of his forthcoming Bingeing with Spling watch party on Saturday, 28 November, the nostalgia of the film will be cross-pollinating with the equally alluring nostalgia of the drive-in theatre experience. Get ready to hit play on Jurassic Park on Showmax at 8pm (GMT +2). The film will also be screening at the Go Drive In in Cape Town simultaneously.
While this virtual-meets-reality screening event is a first for Bingeing with Spling, it also proves that the watch party isn’t a lockdown gimmick. Spling’s wanting to continue the movie night festival into the future and have it happen in all shapes and forms. Whether you’re watching from your couch or from inside your car, the main thing is that you’re watching and sharing the joy of movies with other movie lovers over social media, radio waves, 4G, LTE: you name it!
Being built around Spielberg’s modern classic, Spling has invited self-confessed Jurassic Park megafan turned gaming and tech guru, Grant Hinds to attend. If watching Spling chat Jurassic Park with Grant doesn’t get you excited to relive the magical movie experience, you may need to see a doctor.
Speaking of doctoral degrees, we’ve also got a *bona-fide* paleontologist, or, rather, paleobiologist, in Prof Jonah Choiniere – think Indiana Jones minus the fedora and whip. Spling will discuss the film and unpack some major breakthrough discoveries in South Africa that will make you think twice about where you step!
To add to the movie night festival, John Bartmann from Pravda has crafted an epic ode to Jurassic Park’s soundtrack to open proceedings with a difference! We’re also watching Colin Trevorrow’s short film Battle at Big Rock as a curtain-raiser.
And it’s not only about special guests and exclusive interviews – stay tuned for prizes, film banter, movie trivia and live commentary from Spling. The best comments of the “best movie night in… ever” will make the round-up article on Monday!
Check out the live event tracker on splingmovies.com to get the itinerary and see live updates to each interview, performance and feature all from the comfort of your couch or car seat!
Use the #BingeingWithSpling hashtag on the night to follow the conversation on Twitter, join the official Bingeing with Spling watch party group on Facebook or jump onto the WhatsApp watch party group for live commentary. Oh, and for heaven’s sake… don’t forget the popcorn! There’s bound to be a dinosaur-shaped one in there somewhere.
