The Act S1
First came the 2017 HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and now there’s this critically acclaimed series that brings one of the most notorious court cases of the last five years to life.
Dee Dee Blanchard (Patricia Arquette in an Emmy-winning role) and her daughter Gypsy Rose (Joey King) moved around frequently while Gypsy was growing up, with Dee Dee taking her to one specialist after another for her litany of ailments, from eye issues to a sugar allergy, all of which kept her confined to a wheelchair and unable to enjoy a normal life. But now Gypsy’s hit her early 20s and she’s had enough of her overprotective mother’s hold on her.
Her first step to independence is to make friends with the neighbour’s daughter (AnnaSophia Robb), and her second is to meet a boy online.
Together, they conspire to set Gypsy free – no matter what it takes.
Praise for The Act has come includes RogerEbert.com saying, “A reminder that even when you think you know a great deal about true story, there can be value in retelling it”, and The Atlantic saying, “This is body horror by way of Walt Disney, a ghoulish fantasia of princess gowns, stuffed animals, prescription drugs, and physical harm.”
