When it comes to superheroes, you need to know your Marvel from your DC. The former is pretty much all about Stan Lee; DC is the rest. Even though the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) contains an impressive array of characters – Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman and more – it’s often considered to be a bit of a runner-up to the Marvel gang of Deadpool, Spider-Man, Captain America and The Hulk, as well as super-teams like the Avengers, X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Then came Wonder Woman in 2017 and changed everything.
With Gal Gadot in the title role, it’s the second live-action theatrical film featuring Wonder Woman/Diana following her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the previous year. It gives us insights into Diana’s childhood on the island Themyscira populated by Amazon warriors, before transporting us on a non-stop adventure and plunging us into the depths of World War I.
Trivia: in the original comic books, in which Diana was “born” in 1941, it was World War II. Here, American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash-lands on Themyscira and after being bound with the lasso of truth, admits to being a spy.
Long story short, he and Diana travel to the “real” world in a bid to save it.
The movie grossed more than $821 million worldwide, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of 2017. As of August 2019, Rotten Tomatoes has listed the film fourth on its list of the “Best Superhero Movies of All Time” and the American Film Institute selected it as one of the top 10 films of 2017.
Wonder Woman remains a role model for us all. Have a look at all the times she proved herself to be the most powerful hero in the DCEU.
