Comedy series Work in Progress tackles everything from being transgender to dating, work to insecurities and more. Abby McEnany plays herself. Or at least a fictionalised version in her comedy series Work in Progress (she’s the creator, writer, star and exec producer). Abby is a 45-year-old self-identified “fat queer dyke” with OCD, among other mental health issues. She’s also suicidal and getting into a relationship with a trans man (non-binary actor Theo Germaine).
The writing is dry, the comedy is self-deprecating, the cast play their roles perfectly – it’s just not the kind of subject matter that every comedy fan will find entertaining. But here’s the kicker: it’s all real. This stuff really happened to Abby or people she knows (PS: the only thing that didn’t happen was Abby’s shrink kicking the bucket during their therapy session).
Caroline Framke from variety.com sums it up perfectly: “Work In Progress is a remarkably solid debut from a comedian who knows her own voice, knows it’s funny, and is nonetheless unafraid to admit when she doesn’t like it. If more comedians could do the same, TV would be better off.”
