As teased at the end of You Season 2, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) and Love Quinn-Goldberg (Victoria Pedretti) were following the suburban dream: marriage, baby, nice house. Except Joe was already eyeing the sexy neighbour through the fence; despite everything, he is still looking for The One in You Season 3.
Given that Love is probably perfect for him, being even more violent and murderous than him, especially when faced with jealousy (or even an irritation like an anti-vaxxer; girl, we know how you feel), Joe really should try to settle down. Obviously that’s never going to happen, otherwise there would be no Season 3.
In the upmarket neighbourhood of Madre Linda, the Goldbergs meet a new group of “friends”, including a popular mommy blogger and Instagrammer, whose husband leads an all-guy out-in-the-wilds camping trip complete with chest-beating; the sexy woman next door, her high tech husband, and his college-age son who quickly becomes infatuated with Love; there’s the handsome gay husband and husband; and a life coach, and a couples therapist … yes, for Joe and Love.
With a new baby (Joe wants to write a strongly worded letter to someone because its gender is not as promised, and he is convinced the infant hates him) wearing them out, and the local “mean girls” making Love feel inadequate, nerves are frayed. This time around, although Joe is still obsessively and compulsively stalking women, it’s Love who unleashes the violence. But a couple that kills together, stays together and Joe does everything he can to clean up her messes.
If you were hooked by Season 1, and stuck with it for Season 2, you will keep watching Season 3 even if Joe’s voiceover grows tedious as the show searches for new ground but frequently loses its footing, landing on repetition of previous seasons.
“Another salvage project by Netflix, You went from a Lifetime also-ran to a social-media sensation, with its twisted lead becoming a sort of latter-day Dexter, heavily narrating his bizarre story. The third season continues to balance that delicate juggling act, with a wife, baby and life in suburbia merely adding to the chaos, and for the most part, macabre fun,” says CNN Entertainment.
